A complete hydrological study of the effects of Fatnicko Polje - Bileca accumulation tunnel was conducted by the multi-disciplinary team led by Professor Howard Wheater from Imperial College in London. The team also included leading experts form Exeter University, British Geological Institute, the center for Urban Waters, Greek National Technical institute, University of Belgrade and the Institute for Urbanism from Banja Luka.

The study was conducted in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive. The study's results are based on the analisys of data form all previous research projects, as well as use of the latest hydrological, topographical and meteorological models and technology.

The study's has concluded that the correct use of the Fatnicko Polje - Bileca accumulation will have a positive effect by eliminating floods and thus increasing available arable land.

The study has also concluded that the tunnel will negligible effect on the underground regime of water transfer 9so called 'small waters'). The tunnel will have no negative effects on the surrounding rivers, including Bregava Trebisnjica Neretva, Buna Bunica, Hutovo blato and Neretva.
