EFT is taking the lead in the South-East European energy sector, adopting EU environmental standards across its sites. The Stanari TPP is a clear example of this policy in action.

The lignite thermal power-plant, the first of its kind in the region in 30 years, is being developed in line with the EU directive (2001/80/EC) on the protection of the environment. As such, the Stanari TPP will set a benchamrk for other similar projects.

The environmental impact of the Stanari TPP has been thoroughly analysed over an 18-month period through a series of studies, verified by leading European consultancies. These include detailed measurments of air, water and soil quality, as well as in-depth projections of the impact the plant will have on its surroundings.

Stanari TPP will use the latest combustion technology, state-of-the-art auxiliary systems and supercritical steam parameters. These will minimise fuel consumption, harmful emissions amd residue levels, bringing them not just below the domestic norm, but also below the strictest EU standards.

The plant will also pioneer an approach to the disposal of residues, while the use of a dry-cooling (HELLER) system, a first for the region, will ensure that no heated wastewater is released into the local river system. Stanari TPP will thus have no harmful impact on local rivers.

The recultivation of the Stanari mine, an integral part of the future Stanari TPP complex, will see the whole area of the countryside return to its original state. Again, this is the first time that such a solution is being applied in the region.

In addition to these activities, EFT has been working with the local community to carry out a number of ecological initiatives. This has included presentations and round tables to raise awareness, garbage collection and cleaning of local rivers, as well as substantial forestation programmes in the local area.
